Chapter Eleven
Kenzie
Itâs been a few days since the Fourth of July party and my mind hasnât quit running since. Today is my weekly lunch date with Granny at the Golden Spoon. Same diner, at the same time every Wednesday. I arrive at the Golden Spoon with mere minutes to spare and spot Granny at our usual table through the window. This diner has been around for fifty years, give or take. It has the classic, old school diner feel. Juke-box and all. Itâs such a fun place to visit and itâs Grannyâs favorite.
âHey, Granny,â I say as I walk up to our booth. Iâm convinced someone saves this booth for us every Wednesday at this time. Weâve never once had to wait for it even when they seem busier than usual.
âHi, honey.â She stands to hug me and kisses my cheek. âHow are you today, sweetie?â
We take a seat across from each other as the waitress, Gerri, walks up to us. âTwo of my favorite ladies! How are yâall this morning?â
âJust peachy, Gerri,â Granny says. âHow about yourself?â
âIâm doinâ fantastic! Can I get yâall your usual?â
âYes, please,â Granny responds.
I nod my head. âYes, maâam.â
âYou got it.â She walks away to put our order in. Weâve been coming here for what feels like forever now. Since we always sit at the same table, Gerri is always our waitress. Unless sheâs sick, which is very rare. Gerri comes back with our sweet teas and scurries off to check on her other tables. I tie my straw wrapper in knots, trying to avoid the path my thoughts want to take me down.
Iâve kept myself more busy than normal so I wouldnât have to think of Wes. It hasnât worked to my advantage. Once I lay down at night, heâs all I can think about. Itâs pure torture. Why, out of all the men in the world, do I have to have feelings for a Callahan?
âMackenzie Ann,â Granny says, snapping me out of my thoughts. âDid you hear what I just said?â
âNo, I didnât. Iâm sorry, Granny.â
âWhatâs goinâ on, dear?â
âIâm tired. Iâve been workinâ hard lately,â I tell her, hoping she wonât dig deeper.
âOh, psh.â She swats my hand. âWho do you think youâre talkinâ to? Tell me whatâs troublinâ you.â
I glance out the window, hesitating. Granny clears her throat causing me to turn to face her. Sheâs glaring daggers at me and I spill.
âI met someone when I was in Georgia,â I start.
âWhy on earth didnât you tell me?â
âIt was supposed to be a one-night thing,â I admit.
âMackenzie!â
âGranny! I had just been dumped by my boyfriend of two years. I wanted one night to completely forget about Craig.â
âSo, one night with a mystery man. He must have made some impression if youâre still hung up on him.â She gives me a cat who ate the canary grin and coming from her, my little olâ Granny, itâs very strange.
âThatâs the thing. He isnât just some mystery man.â I hesitate again. Itâs never been so
